A series of chemical reactions
between the base metal and a chemical base solution
result in the formation of a phosphate barrier layer.
There are many types of phosphate coatings each of which
has inherent specific qualities. The function of these
coatings is to:
1. Provide a corrosive resistant barrier.
2. Provide a base to allow the part to improve its oil
or wax adhering ability.
3. Provide a base for subsequent coatings.
4 Aids in break-in of moving parts.
Zinc and maganese phosphate
provide heavier/coarser coatings ranging from 1000 to
4000 mg/ft2. This type of pre-treatment can be used
for the majority of applications such as paints, adhesives,
dry film lubricants to name a few. Iron phosphate and
micro zinc phosphates are used where tighter tolerances
must be maintained. Coating weights usually would run
between 30 to 600 mg/ft2 minimizing the base barrier
thickness and providing a smoother surface.
Lines 1, 2 and 3 are able
to apply Light, Medium, and Heavy Zinc Phosphate. These
lines can also apply manganese phosphate, black phosphate,
phosphate & oil, and pickle and oil.
Hi-Tech Coatings Phosphating Equipment Lines
Line 1
Hi-Tech Coatings, Warren, MI, was purchased new in 1996
and is now used as our specialty line wherein we run
manganese phosphate, medium zinc phosphate, black phosphate
and any overflow from line 2. This line loads and unloads
from one end. It is totally computer operated with random
loading.
Random loading enables Hi-Tech to run as many as several
different recipes at a time significantly reducing down
time.
Line 2
Hi-Tech Coatings, Warren, MI was put into operation
in June of 2000. It has the same features as Line 1
but runs faster and has larger barrels which can run
up to 4000 lbs per barrel. This line is used primarily
for large production runs of light and heavy phosphate
coating applications. Both lines 1 and 2 use the same
waste water treatment system. This line is a barrel
phosphate line; however, we have the ability to run
it as a rack line depending on the part configuration.
Line 3, 6 and 7
Lines 3, 6 and 7 are identical to the line 2 Jessup
line featuring the large 4000 lb barrels and computerized
random loading.
Line 4
Line 4 at Vassar Coatings is a chain-on-edge line with
built in iron phosphate.
Line 5
Line 5 is a combination iron phosphate coating line
and conveyorized parts washing line. This line features
washing, iron phosphate, drying, coating and cure oven.
This line is capable of dip and drain applications and
spray coating applications.
